RP Haven chat room

With the permission of the RP Haven staff, I have set up a chat room for RP Haven on a server I administer. Instructions are below, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Create an account Pidgin- Select menu item Accounts->Manage
- Click the Add button
- Protocol: XMPP
- Screen name: Your character's name
- Domain: mortshire.org
- Resource: Home
- Password: Choose a password
- Local Alias: [Your character's name]@mortshire.org (or whatever you like)
- Remember password: checked (or not, if you prefer)
- Use this buddy for this account (up to you; must be 65x65 and less than 8 KB)
- Create this account on the server: Checked.
- Click the Save button
- NOTE: If the account already exists on the server, but is not already set up in Pidgin, you do need to add it to Pidgin, but you can un-check "Create this account".
- Select menu item Accounts
- Make sure the account is "enabled"
- In Firefox, go to https://www.mortshire.org/jwc/ or http://www.mortshire.org/jwc/
- Username: Your character's name
- Password: Choose a password
- Register new account: Checked
- Click the Login button
- Select menu item Buddies->Add Chat
- Account: (account you created above)
- Room: Haven
- Server: conference.mortshire.org
- Handle: (account you created above)
- Password: RP
- Alias: RP Haven (or whatever you like)
- Group: World Of Warcraft (or whatever you like)
- Click the Add button
- In Firefox, go to https://www.mortshire.org/jwc/ or http://www.mortshire.org/jwc/
- Username: Your character's name
- Password: Choose a password
- Register new account: Not checked
- Click the Login button
- At the bottom left, click the icon of three people standing (tooltip: "Join Groupchat").
- Nickname: (account you created above)
- Room: Haven
- Server: conference.mortshire.org
- Password: RP
- NOTE: If you type in the wrong user password, you will get "Authorization failed". If you type in the wrong chat room password, you will get an empty chat room, but no error message.

The instructions you gave don't really seem to support the correct order of doing things... or getting from A-to-B-to-C ...etc. I made an account on the mortshire.org and it gave me a random chatroom that served no purpose and had no options...

When you register an
When you register an account, you get a sort of splash-room that says "Welcome to Mortshire.org." This is NOT a chat room. After making an account, follow the above instructions to actually join the Haven chatroom.

Is the chat room still
Is the chat room still working? I haven't been able to log into it using the web interface.
I am also having problems
I am also having problems with the system. I hope I am not missing any conversations! Hopefully people are actually using the in game channel so that people can still stay in touch easy. I would be upset to see the live chat die.
We -could- make a chatroom through www.meebo.com that would be easy to access but still has a password. That would be cool I think if the chat stops working.

You are having problems? I am in it all day, every day, and lots of people log in with the web interface.
Are you using Firefox 3 on a Mac, by any chance? There appears to be some wrinkle in that specific combonagtion that has caused a few people some difficulty. Tell me what your set up and what happens when you try to log in, and I will try to help.

The laptop I had the haven and hart chat running on died, and the room that the other windows computer is in is occupied. So.... yeah. All that is left is my Mac, and I can't figure out how to download the progam onto it. :-/ ))

I do not know if it supports multi-user chat (aka "MUC", or, as we humans like to call them, chat rooms). Not every XMPP client does, unfortunately.

Yeah, Adium works pretty
Yeah, Adium works pretty well for chatrooming. I use it too, at home. The configuration is a little different from Pidgin's. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Mandy,
I use Adium at home on my Mac. the website tells you how to install. Once you have it installed and you add the mortshire.org account you have to go up to "Join Chat" fill in the blanks. Haven has to be haven and the passwor RP. If I captialize Haven It won't let me in.

There's been some chatter on
There's been some chatter on the shoutbox about a chat-room for RP. I dumbly had not noticed this "Chat" link up at the top of Haven's page. Is this system operable? I'll admit that it seems like a complex amount of set-up from my un-techie-perspective.

I think the instructions are a bit outdated, as pidgin's gone through some updates and changes, but it mostly works well enough if you can figure it out. Unless she's snuck in some updates lately and i didn't notice; it's been awhile since I've had to fight set-up!
I haven't been in the Haven chatbox for awhile, but I do now use pidgin to manage my various IM programs, for what it's worth. It's very handy when one uses multiple programs.
It wouldn't be hard to start/maintain a second room on the same server, I'd think. We did that in my old IRC RP chat; we had an OOC room and a couple different IC rooms; one was always "the lounge" for general social RP, while the others were used for specific RPs as needed at the time, letting others watch while they idled.

Chatbox is up and has been up
Chatbox is up and has been up for quite some time, thanks to Scar's kindly donation of bandwidth and server space. The Haven chatbox is not IC however.

Tried adding a new account
Tried adding a new account following the directions above, and it keeps failing to connect. I've heard from others the chat is up, but I cannot get either webchat or the Pidgin client to connect.
