Had a -very- short stint on Whisperwind server at the insistence of some coworkers and friends. By level 7, I said forget it and looked for a RP server, and thus found myself on the still new-ish Shadow Council server. And I've never left for long.

I played on Laughing Skull when my coworkers convinced me to start. They quickly outstripped me in level and then the "honor system" hit which made it impossible to level without high-level protectors.
I started on the PvE server Blizzard recommended for me. I think it was Malganis or something. I rolled a NE Druid and remember being completely amazed by the mysterious NE area and the music (I'm probably the only one who likes the NE starter area!). I had a fun time leveling from 1 to 10...and then I hit Auberdine. The mystery of Teldrassil faded into people named PandaHeartXXX and guilds with bizarre, immersion breaking names -- and General Chat!! Bleh.
I was sorta annoyed by the behaviors/names...and then decided to try out this 'RP server' thing since there were at least rules about naming. Shadow Council was the recommended RP server, so I picked it and made a human mage with red hair named Andriona.
Enforcement of naming conventions relies on players. I don't think there are filters effective enough to keep some names out, and the GMs can't vet them all. So they rely on players to make lists and send in tickets. Those people are forced to make name changes.
And when they inevitably change their name to something else offensive (or a play on the same name) that's getting around the violation, is reportable again, and so on.
I agree with what Lirriel said here. Reporting names relies on the players. A few times that I've reported names, I noticed it wasn't done right away but a few days after the ticket was answered.
I noticed lately my tickets, and I heard of others getting the same response time, of tickets getting answered under an hour. Which is really nice rather then waiting two weeks for a response. :)
I started out on a PVP realm with family, a lot of my leveling was from instances. Power leveling from families guild, they needed a healer for their raids and I got drafted. Tell ya, it was a pain to level holy back in BC.
I started here on Shadow Council in early Autumn of 2007 as Windz (Shaleigh now). For a short while I tried going to the other types so I could play with some of my high school friends, but all that accomplished was a headache and some threads loosened in a rather flimsy friendship. I then tried the different RP servers, but there was either a lack of RP or I was shunned because I originally came from a different server. So I came back to Shadow Council and found that I really cannot help but love this RP server over any other server.

Shadow council is my first server, and the only one I have played seriously on. It's where all my friends are, which is both why I started here and why I've stayed.
I began on release on Medivh, because I didn't for whatever reason clue in that the green RP meant roleplay. It was my first MMORPG and I didn't know what ANY of the fancy terms meant. But I'd loved the RTS so I did the game, then wondered why no one on medivh really cared about the story.
When ShC came up, I recreated my toon here, and never looked back except to server transfer Original Akkie over when that became possible.
That's how I started off as well. On a PVP realm, I thought it was a good way to get into character really. I had no idea what role-play was but when I first got this game, I thought to myself that if I am going to be playing one faction. I should probably fight the other faction.
So I decided to tell a short story here about how I found out I was a role-player. Kinda embarrassing really.
One night, this is while I was still very new to the game. I talked to a guy about how many realms there were in the game and asked why. He decided to pull my leg and totally throw me in the wrong direction. My question to him was, what happens if the Prince of Stormwind dies? This was the time when Anduin was shorter, younger and Lord Bolvar Fordragon was leading the Alliance. He responded to me with a simple answer that it's game over if they both die. Later decribed that each realm is an active battle and if a leader a faction dies, the game is over and the realm begins to shut down and players will have to start fresh.
So I took that story seriously, a few hours later there I was sitting outside the Keep of Stormwind thinking I didn't want to lose my level 27 priest and that I would defend it with my life. Sure enough the Horde did make a raid on Stormwind, I was one of the first screaming in trade, yell, general. Anything to get people to defend Bolvar. I remember stating something like, "People of Stormwind your Prince is under attack. Defend him with your lives."
So Bolvar fell in battle and sure enough Nathrezim didn't end and I was pretty upset I fell for this mans trick, was pretty annoyed with him. Annoyed enough I made a character on Shadow Council just to get away from my realm for a few. Ran into a few role-players in the park. I had no idea what they were doing so I sat and watched them talk for a while and soon realized they were getting into character and I liked it.
Edit: I stayed on both realms for a short time, I played ShC for few hours each week just to watch role-players role-play, while I still played with my family and did some light raiding when I got to that level.

I started on pvp servers, malorne being the one with most of my characters (though not the one I started on, don't remember that one, it's been a while). I admittedly miss some aspects of a pvp server, but not others. I liked random world pvp leveling my pally over there but doubt I'd enjoy it as much when I leveled Jann as disc back in BC.
"I am a Vindicator. Do not mistake me for a Paladin. I bring the full fury of the Light's Vengaence to bear on the enemies of the Naruu."
I started over on Nathrezim. Didn't like it so much, then a good friend of mine who RPed brought me over to Shadow Council. She's now over on Cenarion Circle and I visit her occasionally, but I'm here on ShC to stay :)

I started on Shadow Council thanks to some friends who played, so it always came up on my list after that, even though I kept none of those early characters. Tried a normal server briefly with a friend, but, bleh. Some real life friends of mine ended up playing on ShC too until free transfers to new servers in early BC. Then I made my hasty decision to go over there...and came back a few months later. Haven't really had much desire to move off server since, and any attempts to play on other servers fall flat, as I have neither the time nor inclination to play too many alts spread across too many guilds/factions/servers.
I started out on Silver Hand, which was one of the first RP servers, and my experiences there make me appreciate how great Shadow Council is in contrast. You want to talk about cliquishness? If you weren't max level AND in one of the it guilds on SH, you were outright ignored. I had friends there, and they were the ones who encouraged me to roll there, but they seriously said they couldn't risk role-playing with my level 40 ass. Spontaneous RP did not exist, and RP events were invite only and held only in the most remote corners of the world. I jumped ship for Shadow Council when it opened and, though I've messed around with other servers here and there, I always come back.

I started on Argent Dawn (RP) because my brother and his friends were there. They all rolled elves, so there I was a NE hunter with no idea wtf I was doing. (I didn't realized you had to tame different pets to be able to learn new things for them until I was well into my 50s.. try leveling in Vanilla with a pet that only has bite and taunt lvl 1)
Anyway, I played there for a good 6 months and my brother and his friends had long out leveled me and then stopped playing so I started looking around. I think I picked shadow council because it was the last on the list of RP server types at the time. Never looked back.
Me and two of my RL friends started on this server because one of the guys knew folks here. I've toyed on other servers (mostly because my character slots are all full here...) but I always come back to ShC.
My first suggested server was Sentinels, so I played my 10-day trial there, and when I decided to subscribe, my ex-fiance (and kinda still friend) convinced me to roll on ShC. I met more and more people and decided to stay. I've tried playing on other servers that friends play on, but none of them feel like home.

Sadly the naming conventions aren't really enforced on RP servers =/
